Portugal has undergone a remarkable development in recent years, leading the country from the dark days of the financial crisis in 2008 to an impressive economic recovery.
The problems, challenges, but also opportunities that Portugal, and the city of Lisbon in particular, have to deal with are – you could say – symptomatic of developments in other countries and major cities in the EU:
- How do you preserve cultural heritage?
- How to deal with mass tourism?
- What are the effects of climate change?
- What about sustainability and energy security?
- How do you deal with your colonial past?
- And what role do new technologies play?
This Erasmus+ course program offers participants a unique opportunity to explore the diversity and dynamism of Lisbon in the 21st century.
Through a combination of theoretical classes, practical workshops and field trips, participants will develop a deep understanding of the challenges and opportunities facing the city while strengthening their intercultural skills.
The program promotes not only academic knowledge, but also social responsibility and sustainable thinking in the context of a changing world.
Portugal hat in den letzten Jahren eine bemerkenswerte Entwicklung durchlaufen, die das Land von den dunklen Tagen der Finanzkrise im Jahr 2008 zu einer beeindruckenden wirtschaftlichen Erholung geführt hat. Die Probleme, Herausforderungen, aber auch Chancen mit denen sich Portugal und insbesondere die Stadt Lissabon auseinanderzusetzen haben, sind – könnte man sagen – symptomatisch für die Entwicklungen in den anderen Ländern und großen Städten der EU:
- Wie erhält man das Kulturerbe?
- Wie geht man mit dem Massentourismus um?
- Welche Auswirkungen hat der Klimawandel?
- Wie steht es mit der Nachhaltigkeit und Energiesicherheit?
- Wie geht man mit seiner kolonialen Vergangenheit um?
- Und welche Rollen spielen dabei die Neue Technologien?
Dieser Kurs bietet den Teilnehmern und Teilnehmerinnen eine einzigartige Gelegenheit, die Vielfalt und Dynamik Lissabons im 21. Jahrhundert zu erkunden. Durch eine Kombination aus theoretischem Unterricht, praktischen Workshops und Exkursionen werden die Teilnehmer ein tiefes Verständnis für die Herausforderungen und Chancen entwickeln, denen sich die Stadt gegenübersieht, und gleichzeitig ihre interkulturellen Fähigkeiten stärken. Das Programm fördert nicht nur akademisches Wissen, sondern auch soziale Verantwortung und nachhaltiges Denken im Kontext einer sich wandelnden Welt.
Our 6-day Program / Unser 6-Tage Programm
Day 1
Getting to know each other, icebreaking activities, explanation of the week’s schedule and introduction to the topics, Lisbon Survival Kit, introduction to scrollytelling.
Day 2
Introduction to the history of Lisbon and Portugal. From the Romans, the Germanic tribes and the Moors. Secret Lisbon. Portugal in the 20th and 21st century: liberalisation, dictatorship, World War II, the Carnation Revolution, the banking crisis, the present day.
Day 3
Lisbon and water. The other side of the Tagus: Museu da Água, Cristo Rei, Casa de Cerca, Museu Naval. The importance of the Tagus for the emergence and development of the city of Lisbon. Water and climate change – an EU perspective. The drainage project in Lisbon. Visit to the Mãe d’Água water reservoir.
Day 4
Colonialism & Neocolonialism. Colonialism in the cityscape. Museums: typology, characteristics, educational programmes offered by the institutions. UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Lisbon and Sintra. The Museum of the Resistance: Aljube. Impact of the colonial past on the present.
Day 5
Tourism in Lisbon: opportunities and challenges. Cruise tourism, transport planning and business tourism in the 2000s. Development of sustainable tourism strategies. Lisbon as a technology and innovation hub (WEB Summit). Migration.
Day 6
Portugal’s education system: visit to a school. Discussion and feedback. Certificate and graduation.
There will be a website for the course on which all course content as well as the tasks and materials of the course participants (for sharing) will be updated daily.

2. Tag
Einführung in die Geschichte von Lissabon und Portugals. Von den Römern, den Germanen und den Mauren. Das Geheime Lissabon (Secret Lisbon). Portugal im 20. und 21. Jahrhundert: Liberalisierung, Diktatur, 2. Weltkrieg, Nelkenrevolution, Bankenkrise, die Gegenwart.
3. Tag
Lissabon und das Wasser. Die andere Seite des Tejo: Museu da agua, Christo Rei, Casa de Cerca, Museu Naval. Bedeutung des Tejo für die Entstehung und Entwicklung der Stadt Lissabon. Das Wasser und der Klimawandel – eine EU Perspektive. Das Drainage-Projekt in Lissabon. Besuch des Wasserreservoir “Mãe d´Agua”.
4.Tag
Kolonialismus & Neokolonialismus. Kolonialismus im Stadtbild. Die Museen: Typologie, Merkmale, Bildungsprogramme der Einrichtungen. UNESCO-Weltkulturerbestätten in Lissabon und Sintra. Das Museum des Widerstandes: Aljube. Auswirkungen der kolonialen Vergangenheit auf die Gegenwart.
5.Tag
Tourismus in Lissabon: Chancen und Herausforderungen. Vom Kreuzfahrttourismus, der Verkehrsplanung und dem Business Tourismus in den 2000ern. Entwicklung nachhaltiger Tourismusstrategien. Lissabon als Technologie- und Innovationshub (WEB-Summit). Migration.
6.Tag
Portugals Bildungssystem: Besuch einer Schule. Diskussion und Feedback. Zertifikat und Abschluss.
Für den Kurs wird es eine Webseite geben, auf der alle Kursinhalte sowie die Aufgaben und Materialien der Kursteilnehmer (zum Teilen) täglich aktualisiert werden.
