Cultural Heritage – Made in Lisbon: Culture, the arts and crafts in Lisbon and Portugal

Portugal’s cultural identity is one of the richest and most layered in Europe — shaped by centuries of maritime exploration, cross-continental exchange, and a creative spirit that has never stood still. Lisbon, the capital, is today one of the most vibrant and contested cultural cities on the continent: a place where ancient crafts and contemporary design coexist, where a UNESCO-listed music tradition echoes through the same neighbourhoods now covered in world-class street art.

What we will explore and experience:

• How do traditional crafts survive — and reinvent themselves — in a globalised world?
• Who gets to define what counts as authentic cultural heritage?
• What happens when a living art form becomes a tourist commodity?
• How do the arts reflect and respond to migration, diversity and a colonial past?
• What role do design and creative industries play in sustainable urban development?
• And how can education keep cultural heritage alive for the next generation?

This Erasmus+ course offers participants a hands-on, immersive journey into the cultural heart of Lisbon and Portugal. Through a combination of practical workshops, creative exercises and visits to museums, NGOs and alternative cultural spaces, participants will develop a deep understanding of Portuguese artistic traditions — from azulejo tile-making and Fado to street art, contemporary design and culinary heritage.

The programme goes beyond observation. Participants will make, create, taste and discuss — leaving not only with new knowledge, but with concrete tools, methods and inspiration to bring back to their own classrooms, communities and organisations.

Portugals kulturelle Identität zählt zu den reichhaltigsten Europas – geprägt von jahrhundertelanger Seefahrt, interkontinentalem Austausch und einem kreativen Geist, der nie stillgestanden hat. Lissabon, die Hauptstadt, ist heute eine der lebendigsten Kulturstädte des Kontinents: ein Ort, an dem altes Handwerk und zeitgenössisches Design nebeneinander existieren, wo eine von der UNESCO anerkannte Musiktradition durch dieselben Viertel hallt, die heute mit Straßenkunst von Weltklasse geschmückt sind..

Was wir erkunden und erleben werden:

• Wie überleben traditionelle Handwerkskünste – und erfinden sich neu – in einer globalisierten Welt?
• Wer darf definieren, was als authentisches Kulturerbe gilt?
• Was passiert, wenn eine lebendige Kunstform zur touristischen Ware wird?
• Wie reflektieren und reagieren die Künste auf Migration und koloniale Vergangenheit?
• Welche Rolle spielen Design und Kreativwirtschaft bei der Stadtentwicklung?
• Und wie kann Bildung das kulturelle Erbe für die nächste Generation lebendig halten?

Dieser Erasmus+-Kurs bietet eine praxisorientierte, immersive Reise ins kulturelle Herz von Lissabon und Portugal. Durch eine Kombination aus praktischen Workshops, kreativen Übungen und Besuchen in Museen, NGOs und alternativen Kulturräumen entwickeln die Teilnehmenden ein tiefes Verständnis für künstlerische Traditionen – von der Herstellung von Azulejos und dem Fado bis hin zu Street Art und dem kulinarischem Erbe.

Das Programm geht über das reine Beobachten hinaus. Die Teilnehmer werden selbst aktiv werden, gestalten und diskutieren – und am Ende nicht nur neues Wissen, sondern auch konkrete Werkzeuge, Methoden und Inspiration mitnehmen..
